If you've ever fallen in love unexpectedly, take this trip to ancient China, by way of the Benedum Center. In this perpetual favorite, the princess Turandot cruelly executes the men who try to win her - until a stranger conquers her with the power of love. Puccini's score shows off the stunning vocal abilities of Susan Neves (Tosca, 2006) as Turandot and Frank Poretta (Samson & Dalila, 2008); acclaimed Chinese bass Hao-Jing Tian makes his Pittsburgh Opera debut as the deposed king Timur, in a spectacular new production by the Canadian design duo Renaud Doucet and André Barbe. Music Director Antony Walker conducts; Renaud Doucet directs. |
