Hosted by WQED’s Anna Singer, these half-hour previews of each upcoming opera are broadcast twice before each production opens, giving listeners an in-depth introduction to the opera’s singers, music, and production.
Between clips from the haunting score, Anna Singer interviews maestro Antony Walker, Resident Artist Stage Director Dana Kinney and Resident Artist singers Logan Wagner and Erik Nordstrom to get the behind-the-scenes peek into the making of this production.
A woman driven mad by the mystery of her lost son learns of her boy’s unfortunate fate from a chance encounter with a Ferryman while crossing a river. Based on the Japanese Noh play Sumidigawa River, Curlew River retells this story as a Christian parable. Written in the style of monastic plain song and laden with musical symbolism, this piece artfully melds theatrical simplicity with ecumenical grandeur.
