Opera Trunks
Opera Trunks are large, colorful steamer trunks on wheels filled with books, costumes, music, and lesson activities—all the materials needed to introduce opera. Trunk package includes orientation, transportation, one month trunk residency, and a presentation by teaching artists at the residency location. If students can’t come to the opera, we take the opera to them!
- Madama Butterfly Trunk features the Japanese culture and Puccini’s music.
- Opera Improv Trunk features well-loved operas and engages students in creating an “Opera Improv”.
- Carmen Trunk features the Roma culture and Bizet’s music.
- Bravi Tutti Trunk features behind-the-scenes and opera production elements.
- Tot Trunk features child-friendly operas and activities for PreK through Grade 3 students.
The On-Site Presentation engages students in creating an “Opera Improv” on the spot and can be scheduled separately as a stand-alone program.
The first half of the presentation is the teaching part, when each singer sings two brief aria excerpts and teaches an opera fact. Each singer engages the audience to listen for musical elements in the music and show what they hear. The audience then “votes” on which aria will be included in the Opera Improv.
The second half of the presentation is the Opera Improv, when artists tell a story (perform an opera) by improvising recitatives in English and inserting arias/ensembles at preselected points to demonstrate appropriate emotions. The pianist improvises while the
singer tells the story and transitions the music to lead into arias.
