Sullivan Award Winner

Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist Claudia Rosenthal was named a winner of the prestigious 2017 William Matheus Sullivan Foundation Singer Awards earlier this week.

This is the second major award this year for the talented soprano from Scarsdale, NY. In February, Ms. Rosenthal was a winner of the 45th annual George London Foundation Awards Competition. (See related media release.)

“This is more well-deserved recognition for Claudia”, said Pittsburgh Opera General Director Christopher Hahn. “She has delighted our audiences throughout her tenure here, and continues to develop into a full-fledged star.”

Claudia made her Benedum Center debut with Pittsburgh Opera in April as Berta in The Barber of Seville, which the Tribune Review called “superbly performed.”

In September, while also performing the role of Annina in La traviata, Ms. Rosenthal sang the role of Violetta for the final performance from the side of the stage when the scheduled singer, Danielle Pastin, was unable to sing due to laryngitis. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote that “the applause Ms. Rosenthal received at the curtain call was unlike anything (a subscriber) had witnessed in Pittsburgh.” (See related article.)

The Sullivan Foundation “was established through the bequest of a prominent lawyer, William Matheus Sullivan, to identify talented young singers and help them develop professional careers through a unique program combining major awards with five years of additional support.”
